One of my military profile series featuring the US Army Air Forces use of the US Navy's SBD5 Dauntless Dive Bomber. The aircraft was essentially the same but with some structural changes in the landing gear and removal of the tail hook.

The A-24s were originally being shipped to the Philippine Islands prior to the outbreak of World War 2. Their ground crews were already in the Philippine Islands awaiting their arrival. The Philippine Islands were attacked shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The A-24's were then diverted to Australia and leaving their ground crews to fight with the infantry against the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands .
The A-24s left in Australia were assigned to the 8th Bombardment Squadron, 3rd Bombardment Group, to defend New Guinea against a Japanese attack.
